Self-Directed learning (SDL) is an emerging educational approach that aims to prepare students for lifelong learning and helps them develop the learning skills and attitudes necessary for success. SDL approach asks learners to identify their learning objectives and the educational materials. This workshop is designed to provide the participants with an opportunity to experience SDL. Participants will be able to use the knowledge they developed about SDL and implement it using TBL.

This workshop will be held online using Zoom Web Conference. More details on how to access the Zoom meeting room will be sent after registration.

  • Educators and instructors who want to learn more about SDL and how to implement it using TBL.

As a part of the SDL process, no learning objectives will be provided to participants.

About the facilitators

Dr. Suzan Kamel-ElSayed

Dr. Suzan Kamel-ElSayed is an Associate Professor in the Department of the Foundational Medical Studies at OUWB School of Medicine in Michigan, USA. Dr. Kamel-ElSayed graduated from School of Veterinary Medicine, Assiut University, Egypt in 1991. She then started her academic career in 1992 when Dr. Kamel-ElSayed joined Physiology Department, School of Medicine, Assiut University, Egypt. She obtained her Master’s degree in Endocrine Physiology in 1996. In 2004, Dr. Kamel-ElSayed was awarded her PhD from Biomedical Sciences Department, School of Medicine, Creighton University, Omaha USA. In her current role, Dr. Kamel-ElSayed continues teaching physiology to medical students. In her teaching, she applies multiple interactive teaching methods including team-based learning (TBL) In addition, she is among the three faculty members who oversee more than thirty TBLs to be delivered in OUWB preclinical curriculum. She is also an active TBLC consultant, and active TBLC member. Dr. Kamel-ElSayed is the chair of the 2023 TBLC program committee and an active member in the TBLC. She mentored/mentored several medical students in OUWB and has published several articles in basic science research as well as in medical education research.

Dr. Sarah Lerchenfeldt

Dr. Lerchenfeldt is an Assistant Professor of Pharmacology at OUWB School of Medicine in Michigan. She is currently a Co-Director for the Hematology-Lymphoid Organ System Course and the Psychopathology Course. At OUWB, Dr. Lerchenfeldt is actively involved with the TBL curriculum, including the creation, improvement, and facilitation of all TBL modules. Dr. Lerchenfeldt enjoys utilizing TBL as it helps students make the connection between the basic and clinical sciences and assists in the development of skills for lifelong learning. As an active member of the TBLC, Dr. Lerchenfeldt is involved with the Editorial Board and Scholarship Committee.

Dr. Gustavo Patino

Dr. Gustavo Patino is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Foundational Medical Studies at OUWB School of Medicine in Michigan, where his teaching focuses on active learning techniques. He has experience with flipped classrooms and TBL, and is part of the core TBL team that supervises the development and delivery of TBL exercises in the preclinical courses.
